[02]Why ChatGPT is different

One model, two different answers.

Ask ChatGPT for the best product in your category and it answers in one of two modes. Sometimes it answers from memory - brand opinions baked in during training. Sometimes it runs a live web search and builds the answer from pages it fetched seconds ago, citations included.

These two modes reward different work. Memory answers move slowly; they reflect years of accumulated authority, and a brand that loses a memory-mode slot can take months to win it back. Search answers move fast; they reward pages that are fetchable, parseable, and direct enough to quote today.

If you only spot-check ChatGPT by hand, you can't tell which mode produced the answer - so you can't tell which fix applies. Trakkr records both modes separately, tracks them over time, and tells you whether you have a content problem you can fix this week or an authority problem you need to build toward.

[03]What Trakkr tracks

ChatGPT’s answer is the output.

The signals around it are what you can move.

Brand mentions

Every time ChatGPT names your brand in response to a buyer-intent prompt - discovery, comparison, recommendation, and support questions alike.

Cited sources

When ChatGPT searches the web, Trakkr records exactly which URLs it cited - yours, a competitor's, a review site, or a Reddit thread.

Competitor share

Which competitors ChatGPT recommends first, how often they appear next to you, and where you sit in the recommendation order.

Answer mode

Whether each answer came from model memory or live search. The same prompt can flip between modes - and the fix is different for each.

Visibility trend

One ChatGPT score rolling up mention rate, position, and sentiment, tracked daily so you can tie movements to what you shipped.

Mention alerts

Notifications when ChatGPT stops mentioning you, starts recommending a competitor, or picks up a source that gets your facts wrong.

[04]Inside ChatGPT

Four patterns that show up almost every time we run ChatGPT

Observations from running buyer-intent prompts against ChatGPT daily. Directional, not benchmarked - the published numbers live in Trakkr Research.

Search mode rewrites the answer

The same prompt with web search active often returns a different brand list than the memory answer. Brands that look strong in one mode can be invisible in the other.

Memory answers are sticky

Brand lists in memory mode change slowly. That cuts both ways: a slot you hold is defensible, and a slot you lose takes months of authority work to win back.

Citations favor parseable pages

When ChatGPT cites, it links pages it could fetch and parse cleanly. Slow, script-heavy, or blocked pages lose citations to faster third-party summaries of the same facts.

Phrasing shifts the list

"Best CRM" and "which CRM should I use" can return different brands. One prompt is not a measurement - you need a set of variants tracked over time.
